Fred Perry - The Man Behind The Brand
When you think of classic British brands (especially clothing brands) the one name, which always stands out in people’s minds for class, quality, elegance, style, effortless cool and a distinctly English manor is Fred Perry. This unique label has been part of so many British youth sub-cultures, popular culture and mainstream media for the best part of 60 years. Fred Perry is synonymous with mods, northern soul, the original skinheads and the Brit-Pop indie scene of the 1990’s.
In respect of quality, class, style and determination Fred Perry the brand mirrors Fred Perry the man. Frederick John Perry was born on the 18th May 1909 in Stockport. Fred Perry was not from a privileged background, his father Sam was a cotton spinner who worked for the local co-operative party. Sam Perry took a full time job at their party HQ in London. During this time Fred Perry attended Ealing County School where he became obsessed with table tennis. His grit and determination led him on to become world champion in 1928 at the tender age of 18, where he promptly decided to retire to partake in his new passion, lawn tennis.
Fred Perry had discovered lawn tennis four years earlier whilst on a trip with his parents in a Devonshire park. Fred Perry quickly mastered the game and won his first grand slam in the U.S. in 1933. He then won the U.S. open again in 1934 along with the Australian open and his first Wimbledon title. In 1935 Fred Perry won the French open for the first time and Wimbledon for a second time in a row. 1936 saw Fred Perry win both the U.S open and Wimbledon for a third time. Fred Perry was truly a master of his craft, a quintessential Englishman.
However Fred Perry’s success was not entirely without difficulty. As the snobbish Wimbledon higher achy did not take to this working class lad dominating their sport. This was emphasised after Fred Perry’s first Wimbledon title in 1934 when Fred over heard a member of the Wimbledon committee congratulate Fred’s defeated opponent and state ‘congratulations, this was one day when the best man certainly didn’t win’. Fred Perry would encounter this kind of snobbery from the Wimbledon committee throughout his tennis career they found his working class routes distasteful and his on court antics even more so. They thought that Fred was a show off and vulgar on the court. He wasn’t, he was merely a showman. He thought that the crowd deserved to be entertained. Which is now a common belief within sport.
Fred Perry captured the crowd’s imagination, won the titles, and his private life was also subject to many gossip columns as he dated Hollywood actresses and partied with celebrities. Fred Perry was a true sporting hero who encapsulated everything and more, which the public demand (but don’t always receive) from their sporting hero’s.
