Luke1977 - Another Great British Brand

In 2001 Luke Roper along with his two friends Simon & Debs Poole founded Luke 1977. Luke was a talented design student at Central St Martins College of Fashion in London and graduated in 2000. Luke set himself a three-year period in which to set up his own designer brand. However a mere six months after graduating Luke 1977 was born.

From the very beginning of his life Luke had always been surrounded by fashion and design. Luke’s father was an extremely gifted wedding dress maker and by the age of twelve Luke had mastered the use of the sewing machine and sewed the seeds for his future success in design.

The Luke 1977 brand is distinctly British in a number of aspects, the actual style of the brand itself is classic and understated in design, the overtly British imagery in Luke’s logo’s such as the lion’s head and the use of the union flag, the letters u and k within the word Luke being denoted in the colour red to symbolise United kingdom and the slogan United Kingdom of Luke all signify a strong relationship with British working class culture. Another British quality to Luke 1977 is it’s distinct humour and irreverence for popular culture. The Lukesville collection of 2003 was a satire on the Americana T-Shirts that seemed to be everywhere at the time. Luke 1977 also created “dresslexia” as a parody of dyslexia referring to people who seemingly get dressed in the dark, Luke 1977 is fighting in “the dresslexic resistance”.

Since the rise of Luke 1977 in 2001 the growth of the brand has been exponential, in a matter of eight years Luke 1977 has become one of Britain’s most recognisable and highly sought after designer labels. And Luke 1977 does not look like slowing down any time soon, what with the Luke 1977 watch collection coming soon and some of today’s most prolific indie rock acts such as The Twang and Artic Monkeys backing the brand, Luke 1977 is definitely here to stay!
