Modern Amusement

Modern Amusement represents the cool Californian dream of being able to appreciate a high-quality lifestyle under a pure blue sky with the sun on your face. Modern Amusement is predominantly inspired by international art, music, technology and design.

Jeff Yokoyama founded Modern Amusement in Newport Beach, California in 1995. Yokoyama had previous knowledge of the design and fashion industry as he had previously co-founded Maui & Sons in the early 1980’s. Yokoyama later designed apparel for Stussy.

Growing up in Glendale, California Yokoyama was given the nickname ‘black crow’; the image of the black crow would later become the distinctly recognisable logo for Modern Amusement.

Modern Amusement is all about looking smart and stylish yet casual at the same time. Modern Amusement strives to give, (what the Americans would call) the ‘preppy’ look. It’s about the chic sometimes geeky but always cool, casual formality of young west coast America. Modern Amusement is an eclectic designer brand that references a privileged lifestyle, growing up on the sun-drenched shores from Laguna to Malibu.

This can be summarised by the character of Seth Cohen in the teen drama show The O.C. Seth could almost be the poster boy for Modern Amusement, in fact Seth is often portrayed wearing Modern Amusement clothing in the programme.

Distinguished by their attention to ironic detail, sophisticated ease, whimsical nature, graphic energy and sense of humour. Every piece of Modern Amusement holds an element of surprise & discovery, every stitch of Modern Amusement has a purpose, and in every detail there is a story to be told about the Modern Amusement way of living. Modern Amusement is always clean, relaxed, and comfortable – qualities inherent to the California birthright.
