Designer Clothing – a look behind the logos

Logos are an integral part of designer clothing, especially for men’s clothes. The amount of cheap copycat versions of some of fashion’s top names is proof enough of the allure that a logo can have, and how people will go that extra mile to be seen wearing the right clothes. This article takes a look at the enduring power of the logos on designer clothes, and investigates the history of some of the more famous insignias.

Designer Clothing – Power of the Logo
Designer clothing just wouldn’t be the same without logos. The insignia on an item of men’s clothing is what stands it apart from the crowd, and highlights its quality and reputation. Logos communicate a brand’s values to the public, and associate the wearer of that clothing with everything it stands for. Some logos are more instantly recognisable than others – for example the infamous and much-copied Lacoste crocodile. Others are making their mark on the fashion world with a new twist on the old style of insignias, such as Yen Jeans, with its play on the Yen symbol. But whether old or new, a designer clothing brand’s logo is the lifeblood of its relationship with its customers. Without it, the clothes would be just another shirt, sweater or pair of jeans.

Designer Clothing – The Fred Perry Logo
The Fred Perry men’s clothes brand has enjoyed success since the 1940’s, when Wimbledon tennis champion Perry teamed up with an Austrian footballer to design a new, lightweight sweat band. The band was such a success that they decided to roll out a designer clothing brand that would appeal to players and the public alike. The only question was, which insignia should they use? Perry liked the idea of a pipe, which he was frequently seen smoking. His business partner dissuaded him, and cleverly came up with the idea of using the laurel wreath, as seen on the Wimbledon trophy. The logo would stand for ‘excellence’, a brand value still carried by the company today.

Designer Clothing – The Lacoste Logo
The Lacoste logo is instantly recognisable, so much so that it has spawned an infinite number of cheap copycats all wanting to tap into the appeal of the designer clothing label. But not many people know that the crocodile insignia sported on all items of Lacoste’s men’s clothes came about because ‘crocodile’ was Rene Lacoste’s nickname, thanks to his aggressive playing style.

Designer Clothing – The Yen Jeans Logo
A more recent logo is that of iconic denim brand Yen Jeans, created by Japanese designer Michiko Koshino. Making her name with women’s and men’s clothes collections inspired by 80’s and 90’s techno culture, Koshino began her first jeans range in 1995. In the same way that her designer clothing plays with and reworks Japanese culture, so the Yen Jeans logo re-interprets the symbol of the Yen, the Japanese currency. The power of the Yen Jeans logo has proved successful, and now the designer clothing range is a hit with celebrities including David Bowie, David Beckham, Keira Knightley, Gwen Stefani and Noel Gallagher.
