Shohei Otomo Illustrations For Carhartt

At the start of each season the arrival of Carhartt’s Brand Book is always met with great anticipation, particularly by us. The seventh edition, issued for the SS 12 season, is especially good, with features on recent Carhartt collaborations, an in depth interview with Mos Def and the excellent Shohei Otomo showcases his recent illustration campaign for Carhartt’s SS 12 season.

In case you’re not too familiar with Shohei’s work, he is a Japanese artist who excels in beautifully drawn images of Japanese culture, which utilise light and shade to the extreme. Shohei creates his unique works of art by mainly using only ballpoint and marker pens on illustration boards.

What Shohei has done for Carhartt is quite staggering. The sheer artistry is phenomenal and the attention to detail – in regards to the shading work – is simply baffling. The image of the girl in the W Pawky Jacket is a great example of this.

Check out Shohei’s Carhartt images below. You’ll no doubt be as impressed as we are.

Style Icon #13: Bob Dylan

For this latest edition of Style Icons, we at Red Square are sticking with the musical theme and paying tribute to a legend – Bob Dylan. This was a man that was essentially a reluctant spearhead of social unrest, during 60’s America, using his talent as musician to chronicle the thoughts and feelings of the people of that particular era.

Throughout his 50 year career, Dylan has literally done it all! He has explored every genre of music, ranging from folk, rock n roll, blues and even swing! He has also received countless accolades for his work, ranging from Golden Globes and Grammys, to induction into the rock and roll hall of fame, and as if that wasn’t enough, he was even recently given the presidential medal of freedom by current white house occupant, Barack Obama. High praise indeed!

His illustrious career never just stuck within the confounds of music either, he has even tried his hand at painting, seeing some of his pieces displayed in world famous art galleries, not bad eh! But although Dylan was seen as one of the major influences in 60’s music, he was also heralded at the time for his awesome look. It is near impossible to find a photo of the man looking anything other than cool, draped in military jackets or off the wall shirts, complimented with that infamous bee hive like swarm of hair and the ever present black shades.

Anyway, we’re pretty sure if your a fan of Dylan’s work, you won’t need us to remind you of his past exploits and his importance within music history, instead… just take a butchers at the images below, which we feel capture the true essence of Dylan.. in his prime and at the height of his notoriety.

Friend Or Faux – Summer Tee’s

This summer will no doubt see a large majority of you jetting off to foreign shores, trading in the dreary weather of England, for a fortnight of sunshine & cocktails! With that said, the first thing on your holiday shopping list is going to be the t-shirt and we at Red Square Clothing have just added 6 of the best, by up and coming brand Friend Or Faux, to our website.

With graphic prints being all the rage this season and all set to dominate the famed clubbing isles like Ibiza in the coming months, Friend Or Faux have put together some cracking graphics to add a bit of spice to your tee and drift away from the boring, plain old predictable offerings we have become used to, from the usual high street chains.

But, rather than sit here harping on about the different styles available and the quality of each garment, we have simply decided to let you be the judge, by feasting your eyes upon some of the close ups below or using the red links beneath  each photo, to take you straight to the product in question!

It’s Our Birthday | A Retrospective Look at the Past 22 Years

Twenty two years old today. We’re all grown up and we’ve suddenly become a strapping young lad of a store. So, let us take you down memory lane, back to the halcyon days, for a retrospective look at some of Red Square’s most iconic periods, incorporating a plethora of notable names from an extensive brand list going back over two decades. Get ready for some blasts from the past!

The Early Years: Rave Culture

On 8th May 1990 Red Square first opened its doors to the good folk of Teesside. Tucked away on the outskirts of Middlesbrough’s town centre Red Square quickly became one of the most popular menswear destinations in the area.

We began trading at the height of a progressive youth subculture, which the authorities deemed unacceptable and demanded be stamped out – it’s always the ways, isn’t it. The man just doesn’t want you to have any fun. However, a futile attempt by the government to eradicate the burgeoning Rave scene only added to the excitement that the period had to offer.

The Acid house scene of the late 80’s was now transforming into massive ‘illegal’ raves all over the country, which seemed impossible to police, but exactly what a disjointed youth needed from years of unsatisfactory rule by the Conservative government. A big player in the rise of the Acid house/Rave scene was the Manchester club, The Hacienda.

Described by Newsweek magazine as “…the most famous club in the world” The Hacienda was at its height during the Madchester scene of the early 90’s, which had a lot of crossover connections with Rave. Amongst many others, the principal Madchester bands consisted of 808 State, Happy Mondays, Inspiral Carpets, Stone Roses and James.

During the whole 90’s Rave/Madchester scene Red Square was beginning to find its feet as a young clothing store aimed at the very people who were discovering that, when it came to creating an individual identity, music, clothes, art and films were one in the same.

During this period we supplied brands such as; NAF NAF, Chipie, Custard Shop, Passenger – printed rave t-shirts for the big mash up, Gio Goi, Daniel Poole and Dossee Possee. I suppose it goes to show that the times really do reflect the threads.

The Mid 90’s: Cool Britannia Reigns

Moving on to the mid 90’s when everything seemed right with the world. Labour had just deposed the Conservatives from eighteen years of governing and the economy was on the up. Britain seemed to get its mojo back and the entire cultural landscape seemed fresh, modern and intensely ripe to take over the world once more. There was an air optimism and thoughts of swinging London had returned to an invigorated country. This was an era where cultural mediums converged into one whole entity. British music, fashion, art, television, films, books and politics became the envy of the world. Finally, a nation to be proud of!

The reinvigorated cultural industries saw a huge rise in British branding, especially within the fashion industry. Brands such as; Aquascutum, Boxfresh, Mau Mau, Nigel Cabourn, Fred Perry and Burro all came through to Red Square as we supported this exciting time.

Red Square’s Italian Connection

Over the years Red Square has also flirted with a more continental type of product. In the early 00’s Italian high fashion was the must have for all style conscious young chaps. As long time admirers of the Italian tailoring we were thrilled to be able to stock exclusive brands like; Moschino, Iceberg, Valentino Sport and Versace.

Denim Dominates

Denim has, and always will be, big news for men’s style. However, a period in the noughties saw denim rise to exceptional heights. A certain Mr Beckham kicked it all off when he was spotted wearing a pair of Evisu jeans. G-Star, Diesel, Wrangler, Lee, Liberto and Chambers all became very big during this period and we were lucky enough to stock every single one of them.

Today, Edwin is Red Square’s, and the industry’s, most popular and influential denim brand.

Streetwear Supreme

Throughout our twenty two year history a constant thread through our vast tapestry has been the inclusion of streetwear to our array of brands. We are massive streetwear enthusiasts and we have championed its popularity from our very beginning. One of our longest standing streetwear brands has to be the incomparable, Carhartt. The Carhartt brand began life as an American work wear brand, which has evolved into a streetwear brand in European and Japanese territories.

Over the years we have stocked many streetwear brands such as; Stussy, Silas, Fresh Jive – a 90’s brand known for being one of the originators of streetwear culture, Alife, Crooks & Castles, The Hundreds, Undefeated, Carhartt and many, many more, far too many to mention.

Well, it’s been an enjoyable jaunt back in time. We hope you’ve enjoyed our little analysis and we look forward to celebrating the next 22 years in business. Thanks for all of your support over the years, it is you that has made us the store we are today.

The Godfather Recreates

Early last month Sir Peter Blake marked his 80th by creating a modern interpretation of one of his original works, which you should undoubtedly recognise as the cover for the Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album, a masterful creation by The Beatles, obviously.

The Godfather of Pop Art has added a whole new selection of modern day cultural figures, with the reasoning behind their selection down to those who he admires and inspires him. Included are the likes of Amy Winehouse, Noel Gallagher, Damian Hurst, Kate Moss and Martin Parr. Paul McCartney maintains a place.

Merc – The Harrington Jacket

The newest brand to fly in through the Red Square doors is the brilliant, Merc . The brand began on a small market stall on Carnaby, which quickly grew into a fully fledged store at number 10 Carnaby Street. Of course as we all know, in the height of the 60’s, Carnaby Street was the epicentre for the cool cats of swinging London to buy their threads, with Merc being the first point of call for the mods and rude boys alike.

Back then one of the most popular pieces was the “Harrington Jacket”, a jacket which has been copied the world over by numerous, successful high street brands and it is that very jacket, which has made a comeback with the latest collection here today in store and online.

Comprised from the highest quality cotton, the jackets are available in a vast colour scheme which includes: Red, Black, Navy, Red, Cream, Grey and Burgundy. Each jacket features a brilliant red checkered lining, 2 button fastening flap pockets and a perfect dual button overlay collar, that features 2 Merc lasered buttons.

Don’t take our word on the quality of these timeless jackets however, instead take a brief look at the images below or alternatively head straight over to the Merc section, for a further insight!

Edwin – The ‘Unwashed’ Wash

When it comes to innovation in denim Edwin has always been at the very front of the pack. The folks at Edwin are widely regarded as supreme innovators in ‘old wash’ techniques, which are now widely replicated by the majority of other denim brands on the market.

However, we’re going to focus on another of Edwin’s timeless washes. The ‘unwashed’ wash, which is somewhat of a misnomer, as it isn’t actually a wash at all. It is both unwashed and untreated, giving the denim the natural look, perfect for the wearer to mould to their own unique specifications.

The unwashed look is one of the most popular ‘washes’ from the entire Edwin collection. 25 separate styles from 9 different fits have all been provided with the unwashed treatment.

A few examples of the unwashed Edwin denim follow below. Our favourites include, from left to right, the unwashed ED-39, ED-55 and ED-71.

Style Icons #12: The Specials

Carrying on from our last Style Icon edition, we have decided to keep things musical and pay tribute to those British rude boys of the late 70’s “The Specials”.

The Specials were one of a number of bands to break out from the legendary “Two Tone Records” in a great era for music. Others included “Madness” and even “Bad Manners”, all of which contributed to the mass Ska revival in 79′.

The reason we have chosen to focus on this is simple, this week at Red Square Clothing has saw the arrival of excellent British brand Merc, which was responsible for kitting out the before mentioned stars and also, was huge amongst the mod culture which was peaking around the same time.

Even though The Specials were seen largely as a Ska band, they leaned slightly more over towards the MOD style of  tonic and mohair suits, loafers and check shirts. The very check shirts that we mention are now online and available to buy at Red Square, aswel as a number of classic Harrington Jackets and cool polo shirts.

The lads didn’t just look the part however, they also had the talent to sit alongside the image, with 7 consecutive top 10 UK singles! Not to mention a few number 1 hits along the way with tunes such as “Too Much Too Young” & “Ghost Town”, the latter of which had an unemployment theme, which captured the minds of a generation that fell directly into that very bracket.

Anyway, rather than harp on all afternoon, just take a look at the Terry and the lads for yourself below and to kit yourself out, head on over to the Merc section and re-live a part of that glorious British era…

80s casual’s Grafters Polo Shirts S/S 12

The Eighties Grafters range takes its inspiration from the European away trips of the early 1980s, teenagers reveled in the chance to bring back designer goods that were previously unavailable in the UK, transforming the uniform of the rebellious British youth. Contributing styles and colours that would go on to change the face of the British high street forever.

Here we have a range of very nice polo shirts from the Grafters collection, available in a selection of 5 exquisite summer hues; Navy, Grey, White, Black, and Sky. Each shirt being of a supreme quality, with the colours evoking the spirit of the 80s era, grafting in those warmer Southern climates.

Edwin Jeans – The Sandstorm Jacket

This week at Red Square Clothing, saw the arrival of an excellent new offering from the Edwin Jeans stable, fresh for the spring/summer season. We already know Edwin are the masters when it comes to producing a quality pair of jeans, however this time round they have produced the goods with the superb lightweight, “Sandstorm Jacket“.

We thought nothing could surpass the Edwin Roader Jacket, but this latest piece of outerwear really pushes it close! Comprised from the highest quality cotton, the Sandstorm features a brilliant double breasted front, complete with large stylish brown buttons throughout! Which we feel give it that more edgy, vintage look. Also featured on the garment are the traditional 2 front slit pockets and a rather good Edwin Jeans leather sleeve emblem, which rounds the jacket off nicely with that ever present touch of quality you expect from an Edwin piece.

So enough talk, take a look at the quality for yourself below or alternatively head straight on over to the Edwin Jeans section of the site, for a much deeper insight into yet another excellent piece from the denim kings!…
