In 1889, the small French commune of Saint James started to spin and dye locally produced wool. Over time the small industry grew and started to produce underwear and later the ‘fisherman’s sweater’.

The ‘Fisherman’s sweater’ or the ‘Real Breton Fisherman’s Sweater’ is undoubtedly Saint James’ most iconic garment to date. It was originally intended for deep sea fisherman working off the coast of France (hence the name). It was popular amongst the fishing industry due to its specialist properties such as, being knitted entirely from pure wool. And with such a thick and tight weave, they are considered to be like ‘a second skin’ and are ‘almost entirely waterproof’.

In recent times Saint James has also transferred its popularity from industry to fashion. This is due to known seafarers and yachtsman endorsing the Brand and a desire for elegant and stylish yet comfortable and practical clothing by the customer and the fashion industry.

By supplying independent retailers and establishing their own boutiques in territories such as Canada, Japan, Europe and the U.S. Saint James is now well and truly a recognised international brand standing for quality and style.
